I have a good friend who was recently laid off after 30 years of service with a Fortune 500 company. In this industry, it is common for people to work in a position for a few years, then leave for greener pastures. When this happens, the new companies may not only hire a new person or fill the void with a cheaper person, but will also try to make the position feel that the old person wasn’t just replaced, but replaced with a more skilled person.
In many companies, this has happened, and is why people are often referred to as “system designers.” This term is often used to describe a person in the middle, who is trying to get the best of both worlds: being in a position where they both can excel, but not so well that they become a distraction. The best example of this is the CEO of a publicly-traded company.
It’s called a middle manager. The company is trying to do the right thing, but the middle manager is also doing the right thing. If the CEO wasn’t in the middle, then they would have to hire a CEO, and that would be a huge waste of time and money.
