When I was in college, I developed a good rulebook for performance feedback. It’s a great way to get feedback, it’s a great way to get it right, and it’s also a great way to get feedback from other people. With my practice, my friends, my family, my coworkers, and even the rest of my family know this and know I’m not all that interested in performance feedback.

One of the common problems that we see with performance feedback is that it’s too blunt and not very effective. The problem is that when a feedback-giver is too blunt, he/she isn’t truly evaluating your work. You can do a good job of saying what you’ve done, but if you have to say that you’ve done the same thing, that’s not really feedback.

It isnt asking you what you’ve done (as I’ve shown in the past, this is not what performance feedback is about) or what your goal is (which is another way of saying, what you are about to do). Rather, it is a description of how you are performing, with as many details as possible, and then a plan how to improve your performance.

Performance feedback is usually done by doing the same thing again. It isnt like a score, which is a measurement of how someone is doing or improving. This is a more subjective rating of how good or bad your performance is. This is not about your final score, but more so about how you are performing right now and how you are doing compared to how you would like to do.
