When we have a problem (and sometimes we do), we want to take it on a personal level.
I remember how my friend Ben sent me his crystalized intelligence email, and I thought he was joking. In reality, this is the third and fourth person I’ve heard that’s said this to me, and a few of them are my parents. I like this style of self-awareness. It’s easy to see the person’s point of view. It’s also easy to understand their motivations. It’s hard to understand someone else’s.
There are three different ways in which we can become well-rounded self-aware people. We can become “cognitively challenged”—people who are able to recognize the difference between a joke and a serious situation. Then we can become “cognitively adept”—people who can recognize what is real, and can also recognize when things are funny. Then we can become “cognitively intelligent”—people who can recognize how people can be funny.
These three types of self-awareness are all very different from each other. The first type of self-awareness is very analytical, focused on one thing at a time. The other two types of self-awareness are less analytical, and are more fluid and spontaneous.

For the sake of simplicity and in terms of the story, I won’t go into all the detail here at the beginning. The story starts out on a beach and ends up in a dark room. I’m going to say that the first type of self-awareness is really the most exciting and most enjoyable because it’s the only one that we can give it. The other two types of self-awareness are less analytical, and are more spontaneous.

They can think about it at any time, and can be completely absorbed by the world around them. For people with the first type, it is usually not fixed, and they can be completely absorbed by a thought at any time. They can think about it for hours at a time.
The difference between the two, of course, lies in what we mean by self-awareness. We can talk about self-awareness in terms of people having a “crystalized” intelligence, or being able to think about something for hours at a time. It is important to note that these aren’t the same thing. Some people have both a crystallized and spontaneous intelligence.
